El Paso is part of the desert Southwest.  Hot and dry summers; cool winters.  Elevation 3,700 ft.  Agricultural products include cotton, pecan, onion and chili pepper.  The Spaniards settled in this area in 1598.  El Paso del Rio Grande del Norte was "the pass across the big river of the north".

Nowadays, the river is only calf deep and has become part of the boundary between the United States and Mexico.  Population in El Paso is around 700,000.  Laura Bush and Sandra Day O'Connor (US Supreme Court justice) both graduated from high schools here.

About 2 miles from our house, there is a small marsh where we sometimes go, to watch migratory birds.  Recently, archaeologists were very excited to find an old Native American village buried nearby.  A cluster of about 30 pit houses built over 4,000 yrs ago.  Excavation will start in 2-3 years and will take 20 years to complete.  We'll get to watch, if we last that long.   ^_^
